The machine, which is manufactured by Sorin, is the company’s brand-new model C5 and the first to be procured in Africa. The heart-lung machine is used in open heart surgery and enhances the overall application of open heart surgery for various cardiac related problems. Operated by a qualified heart-lung machine operator or perfusionist the machine itself is that piece of equipment which circulates the patient’s blood whilst he or she is being operated on.
