Kempton Park Civic Centre was the venue for the Arwyp Annual Achievement Awards held on the afternoon of Friday 25 July 2008. The ceremony was held to celebrate the academic achievements of the Arwyp Training Institute learners and to acknowledge the loyalty and service of the Arwyp Medical Centre employees.
After the academic procession had entered the hall, proceedings were initiated by the hospital’s superintendent Henry du Plooy who welcomed all present and reminded the students that we are all ‘born to shine’. The Arwyp Training Centre (ATI) Choir then treated the audience to a rousing rendition of Gaudiamus Igitur, the song played at graduations everywhere, and a selection of melodies. This year’s guest speaker was National Hospital Network CEO Otto Wypkema who is also the CEO of Arwyp.
His address focused on the fact that, although there are challenges in the medical industry, South Africa is not alone in facing these challenges and there are now more opportunities worldwide for trained, skilled nurses than ever before. The certificates, diplomas and awards were then presented to the graduating students by Mr. Wypkema, ATI Training Manager Mrs. Helene Pieterse and Arwyp Core Operations Manager Mrs. Helen Harris.
Top honours went to Modiegi Mohlahlo, Zasskia Roode and Refiloe Mashigo who were presented with Best Student Awards. SRC President Liza Kiley then congratulated her fellow students and stressed the importance to them of determination to carry on even in adversity. A group of students then performed the lamp ceremony and recited the nurses’ pledge reminding everyone of the incredible commitment being made by the graduates to the community and to their fellow man.
Lunch was then served by the hospital’s facilities’ department which was able to cater for the large crowd which included proud family members who had come to support their loved ones.
Proceedings continued with the Employee of the Year and Long Service Awards. Employees from all departments received certificates for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service. The employees who had been nominated for Employee of the month for the past year were then presented with certificates. Isaac Mothupi was the lucky and deserving winner of the Employee of the Year Award, namely a trip to Zanzibar. A special afternoon was had by all. Congratulations and well done to all the worthy winners.
