Wednesday 25 April 2007 was Africa Malaria day. Eye-catching posters and brochures about malaria were received from Glaxo Smith Kline. These were put up in the Customer Support Centre and displayed in the doctors consulting area in Central Avenue.

On Tuesday, 24th April a lecture was given in the auditorium by Dr. S. Waner, a specialist in travel and tropical medicine and arranged by Mandy Haasbroek of the Occupational Health Clinic. The lecture was very well attended by students and staff. Dr. Waner gave an excellent overview of malaria as well as of the latest trends in the treatment of the disease at a level which was clear to all. After the lecture, time was given for questions.

The next day Sr. Dea Venter and eight students went to the Festival Mall in Kempton Park Central to advise the community regarding malaria. About 20 000 pamphlets were distributed and the students were able to advise and inform the public about the precautions and treatment to be taken prior to traveling, as well as the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of malaria following a visit in a malaria area.
