The Arwyp Medical Centre Training Institute (ATI) held its 10th annual merit awards on 23 June 2006. The function, attended by almost 400 guests was held at the Kempton Park Civic Centre. Proceedings were led by Sister Ncube of the ATI. Hospital CEO Otto Wypkema gave the opening address in which he reflected on the achievements of both Arwyp Medical Centre and the ATI and encouraged the students to empower themselves to succeed. Members of the ATI SRC officially opened the proceedings with the “Nurse’s Prayer”.
Deshun Deysel an attractive young female mountaineer who grew up in the townships and who came within 500m of reaching the top of Mt Everest in an expedition 3 years ago, provided everyone and particularly the graduates, with an inspiring message of commitment and achievement. In her message which was about being an inspiration to others, she quoted the saying: A thousand candles can be lit from a single candle and its light will not be dimmed.
Training manager Mrs. Helene Pieterse and Otto Wypkema then handed out the awards. This year 143 students graduated. In addition, the institute also acknowledged further achievements of nurses based at the hospital who had completed diplomas in nursing education and nursing management.
Nurses from the very first intake of ATI students had been invited to the function and were presented with a small token as a reminder of the day’s proceedings. Dr Wian Stander, Arwyp’s superintendent displayed another of his talents when he entertained everyone by singing to them. Photos were taken of the students and their proud families and a meal was served to round off the afternoon.
