- Arwyp, a privately-owned hospital, was established in 1985 and opened its doors to the public in 1986. The founding shareholders were Dr W Wypkema, Mr. PJKM Arendsen, Mr. F Wypkema and Mr. J. Langerak.
- The hospital initially occupied only the 5th, 6th and 7th floors housing administration wards and theatre. Before long the entire building was used with wards on every floor and the 9th and 10th floor was used for doctors and administration.
- In 1989 Dr Wypkema and Mr. Arendsen bought out Mr F. Wypkema and Mr. Langerak and changed the name from Kempton Park Hydromed to Arwyp Medical Centre.
- In 1992 due to increasing market share and expansion of the hospital, the property on the southern side was acquired and a 4 story building was erected to house the radiology department with both CAT and MRI scanners, as well as doctors consulting rooms. In 1993 the maternity ward was opened on the 3rd floor.
- In 2000 a parking stand on the western side currently known as Pine Parking was bought to satisfy the increasing demand for parking space.
- In 2000 the double story block of flats, previously known as Langtree Court, was bought to house the management team and administration departments.
- In 2001 Arwyp achieved a NOSA 5 star grading which marked the starting point of our drive towards quality.
- In 2002 the administration and management departments were moved to the refurbished Langtree Court building known today as the “Customer Support Centre” signifying our drive towards customer satisfaction.
- In 2003 Arwyp was ISO 9001:2000 graded, the first hospital in Africa to receive this certification.
- In 2003 the neurology and rehabilitation units were opened
- In 2003 the 5 story office block on the hospital’s eastern side, previously known as the Kempen Building, was purchased to house the growing demand for doctors’ consulting rooms, the 4 Med Nursing Agency, Arwyp Training Institute, Dialysis Unit, Out-patients Department and Clinical Research Centre and is known today as the Arwyp Medical Suites building.
- In 2004 the Blockhouse building on the western side was purchased and converted into doctors consulting rooms and an Occupational Health Clinic.
- In 2006 the building in Blockhouse Street was bought and converted into doctors’ rooms and an Occupational Health Clinic
- In 2006 the three ‘Beetge properties’ on the eastern side between the main building and the Arwyp Medical Suites building were bought for future expansion of wards and the theatre complex.
